Shopware United is the independent, non-profit community organisation behind the Shopware ecosystem – it connects developers, agencies, merchants and technology partners worldwide and is deliberately not part of Shopware AG. When a community body like that takes a closer look at an extension, it means more to us at PremSoft than a nice mention – it’s independent confirmation that we’re solving a real, everyday problem for merchants. And that’s exactly what just happened: Shopware United has featured our Custom JavaScript/CSS Manager – under the fitting title „small changes, no console”.
We’re glad to use their article as a starting point to explain, in our own words, what the extension is really about and why it has quietly become a background helper in so many shops.
The core problem: theme files are off-limits
Almost every shop eventually needs a small adjustment: a tracking snippet, a chat widget, a CSS fix for a button that doesn’t sit quite right on mobile. The traditional route runs through custom themes or plugins – and through direct access to server and theme files. That’s not only technically demanding, it’s risky. As our founder Sven Mittreiter puts it in the Shopware United interview: theme files should never be edited directly. Otherwise, the next update simply wipes out your manual changes.
The Custom JavaScript/CSS Manager flips that logic around. Your code no longer lives in fragile theme files, but in clean, dedicated containers managed by the extension – and therefore survives updates and theme changes.
How it works
After installation, a new menu entry for Custom CSS/JS appears in the Shopware admin. From there, the workflow is deliberately straightforward:
- Create a container: a separate, named container for each task – so everything stays organised, even with many snippets.
- Choose a sales channel: assign each container to one or more sales channels – ideal for multi-shop setups.
- Add your code: in the built-in editor with syntax highlighting for JavaScript and SCSS – including access to inherited SCSS variables and mixins from themes and plugins.
- Compile with one click: the code is injected directly into the theme compilation instead of triggering additional resource requests. The result is visible in the storefront right away.
Why it makes a difference day to day
The biggest advantage is update resilience: because customizations live in containers rather than theme files, they aren’t lost during Shopware upgrades. Independence matters just as much. Shopware United describes a case from the food industry where even the smallest CSS change had to go through the managing agency – sometimes taking two weeks. One merchant sums it up in the quoted testimonials: the extension „solves the problem when SSH access isn’t available with your host.” Others value having all customizations consolidated in one place – one client even loaded a 5,000-line CSS file without a hitch.
The typical use cases are varied accordingly: styling adjustments to themes and plugins, JavaScript integrations such as tracking or chat solutions, and quick fixes without waiting on developer or agency capacity.
